寬永通寶始鑄于日本第108代后水尾天皇寬永三年（1626年），從1636年開始大量鑄造。日本是最早開始仿鑄中國方孔圓錢的國家。據(jù)一些專家研究，日本在公元708年奈良朝元明天皇和同元年(公元708年，相當(dāng)于我國唐中宗景龍二年)開始仿效中國唐朝鑄幣，鑄行“和同開珎”方孔圓錢。
