1912年4月袁世凱出任大總統(tǒng)。北洋政府鑒于當(dāng)時鑄幣、紙幣十分復(fù)雜，流通的中外貨幣在百種以上，規(guī)格不一，流通混亂，折算繁瑣，民眾積怨，同時也想借助貨幣改制以解決軍費問題，便決定鑄發(fā)國幣。袁世凱為了提高自己的統(tǒng)治地位，趁機(jī)把他的頭像鑄于幣面，“袁大頭”由此而來.“袁大頭”首次的鑄造時間是民國三年，而且該幣被定為中華民國國幣，因此，它在我國的錢幣史上具有非常重要的地位。

It was first minted in three years of the Republic of China, and this coin was designated as the national currency of China, so it played a very important role in the history of Chinese coins.
在正式開鑄銀幣前，同樣有用銅沖壓試機(jī)這一過程，其試機(jī)結(jié)果稱為試機(jī)樣幣。“初始試鑄幣”—是指任何一款機(jī)制幣，一切鑄幣工作已臻妥善，奉批開始鑄幣“后”所產(chǎn)出。“初始試鑄幣”產(chǎn)出后，經(jīng)過檢視，發(fā)現(xiàn)缺點，微調(diào)、改正、修圖，再重新鑄造，達(dá)可呈上御覽核批的階段，該批幣就稱為“試鑄樣幣”。之后，還有報審“呈報樣幣”階段，就是逐一向上報審批通過，之后批量生產(chǎn)流通的銀幣。試鑄幣存世量極少，流傳到民間的更少。

此枚中華民國三年袁大頭試鑄幣正面為袁世凱半身側(cè)面戎裝像，上列“中華民國三年”六字，幣面干凈，錢文清晰，字體端莊工整，筆畫剛勁有力。錢幣背面圖案為兩條嘉禾左右交互，下系結(jié)帶，嘉禾紋清晰細(xì)膩，粗細(xì)分明，層次感強(qiáng)；中央為“壹圓”幣值字樣，外環(huán)為直齒邊。此枚錢幣包漿自然渾厚，雕工精美，紋飾線條粗細(xì)均勻，流暢自然，字體端正工整，清秀俊逸，可見匠師的雕刻工藝十分高超。所以試鑄幣是當(dāng)世的完成品樣品，是后續(xù)鑄銀幣的對照品，此幣色澤光鮮，品相優(yōu)異，包漿自然，紋飾深淺適度，具有極高的藝術(shù)鑒賞和收藏價值。
