鎏金是將金和水銀合成金汞劑，涂在銅器表面，然后加熱使水銀蒸發(fā)，金就附著在器面不脫。關(guān)于金汞劑的記載，最初見于東漢煉丹家魏伯陽的《周易參同契》。而關(guān)于鎏金技術(shù)的記載，最早見于梁代。《本草綱目·水銀條》引梁代陶弘景的話說：水銀“能消化金銀使成泥，人以鍍物是也。”這個(gè)記載比鎏金器物的出現(xiàn)晚了約八個(gè)世紀(jì)。自清代以來一般佛像鎏金較為稀松、膚淺，而此佛像鎏真金，圓潤厚實(shí)，非常難得。

觀音菩薩又作觀世音菩薩、觀自在菩薩、光世音菩薩等，她相貌端莊慈祥，經(jīng)常手持凈瓶楊柳，具有無量的智慧和神通，大慈大悲，普救人間疾苦。當(dāng)人們遇到災(zāi)難時(shí)，只要念其名號，便前往救度，所以稱觀世音。銅觀音的種類有很多，像是三面觀音、千手觀音、凈瓶觀音、蓮座觀音、送子觀音等多種觀音樣式。

此菩薩座像，長24厘米，寬23厘米，高40厘米 重6852克，尺寸碩大，極為稀珍。整體中式造型，面生女相，身披佛衣，觀音菩薩頭戴化佛金冠，身飾瓔珞環(huán)釧，坐于蓮花臺之上，楚楚動(dòng)人。骨骼比例準(zhǔn)確均勻，裝飾造型精致富麗，開臉若隱若現(xiàn)，靜中有動(dòng)，內(nèi)秀深藏。此一風(fēng)格始現(xiàn)于明中晚期，至今仍為東亞地區(qū)觀音造像之常見式樣。 觀音 手執(zhí)玉凈瓶，內(nèi)儲 甘露 水，有 起死回生 的功效。《西游記》中觀音曾用此瓶中水， 救活人參果樹，可盛四海之水。

2000年以后，國內(nèi)佛像收藏才開始啟動(dòng)。2001年香港佳士得拍賣的永樂御制鎏金銅釋迦牟尼佛僅以227萬成交，國內(nèi)反應(yīng)冷淡；但隨著中國藝術(shù)市場的發(fā)展和人們對藝術(shù)品認(rèn)識水平的不斷提高，金銅佛造像藝術(shù)的價(jià)值逐漸被人們所認(rèn)識和挖掘，金銅佛市場開始得到持續(xù)開發(fā)。在2016香港中華大型藝術(shù)品春季拍賣會上，雷納德國際拍賣有限公司推出一對銅鎏金佛像擺件，起拍價(jià)120萬，經(jīng)過多輪競拍，最終成交價(jià)為626萬，由此可見其價(jià)值之高。
