金農 字壽門，號冬心，又司農等，仁和（今杭州）人。流寓揚州。精鑒賞、工書畫。詩文金石。書法工隸楷。隸以樸厚見長，楷含隸意，自成一格，號稱“漆書”。五十歲后始作畫，山水人物、佛像鞍馬、梅竹信筆揮寫，形象拙樸，構圖新穎，皆成別有心裁之作，為世人稱許。被稱為揚州八家首席。

金農的鞍馬畫繼承唐人，能在韓干等人寫實的基礎上又注重意象，將筆墨的表現形式加以適當的夸張、變形，這使得他筆下的馬既具備了唐人畫馬的烈性與彪悍，又顯示出金氏畫馬“迥立閶闔生長風”的俊逸風骨。此畫墨色濃淡相交，拙樸厚重的線條色勒出馬的風韻，天馬威武、強壯、俊逸、飄灑的形象躍然紙上。金農的字得力于《天發神讖碑》和龍門造像等碑，融合漢隸、魏楷，畫中書法用筆方正、棱角分明、結構緊湊、體勢欹側是其楷書中的佳作。秦祖永《桐陰論畫》評金農的畫“涉筆即古，脫盡畫家習氣”，此畫足可為鐵證。
