金農 字壽門,號冬心,又司農等,仁和(今杭州)人。流寓揚州。精鑒賞、工書畫。詩文金石。書法工隸楷。隸以樸厚見長,楷含隸意,自成一格,號稱“漆書”。五十歲后始作畫,山水人物、佛像鞍馬、梅竹信筆揮寫,形象拙樸,構圖新穎,皆成別有心裁之作,為世人稱許。被稱為揚州八家首席。

金農的鞍馬畫繼承唐人,能在韓干等人寫實的基礎上又注重意象,將筆墨的表現形式加以適當的夸張、變形,這使得他筆下的馬既具備了唐人畫馬的烈性與彪悍,又顯示出金氏畫馬“迥立閶闔生長風”的俊逸風骨。此畫墨色濃淡相交,拙樸厚重的線條色勒出馬的風韻,天馬威武、強壯、俊逸、飄灑的形象躍然紙上。金農的字得力于《天發神讖碑》和龍門造像等碑,融合漢隸、魏楷,畫中書法用筆方正、棱角分明、結構緊湊、體勢欹側是其楷書中的佳作。秦祖永《桐陰論畫》評金農的畫“涉筆即古,脫盡畫家習氣”,此畫足可為鐵證。
