慈禧在晚清歷史中有著濃墨重彩的一筆，作為一個(gè)頗具野心的女人，她并不甘心于做一個(gè)普通的母親或是皇太后。因此才有咸豐帝駕崩后的：辛酉政變。政變之后帶來(lái)的是無(wú)上的榮耀和權(quán)臣的擁護(hù)，形成后來(lái)“二宮垂簾，親王議政”的格局。同治重寶的出現(xiàn)，就是慈禧真正掌握大權(quán)的開(kāi)始。

同治重寶鑄造于清同治年間，此時(shí)的咸豐皇帝已經(jīng)駕崩，其兒子載淳即將繼位，然而在其母后的壓迫下，原本擬定的祺祥錢(qián)并沒(méi)有流通開(kāi)來(lái)。而另一種錢(qián)幣，就要在一個(gè)女人的野心中出現(xiàn)了。咸豐十一年九月，慈禧發(fā)動(dòng)了辛酉政變，且提出了“同治”的這個(gè)年號(hào)。這就是同治錢(qián)的初擬。
“同治”意味共同治理，這里暗喻的不是慈禧與皇帝共同治理國(guó)家，而是其自身與尊皇后鈕祜祿氏一同瓜分，清朝的執(zhí)政大權(quán)。這個(gè)完美的提議不僅得到當(dāng)事人的認(rèn)可，且內(nèi)閣大臣們與朝廷重臣也都順勢(shì)而為。因此同治重寶的鑄造就是在這樣一段頗具野心的歷史下面世的。
