北洋機(jī)器局于光緒二十三年和二十四年(1897-1898年)繼續(xù)各鑄造了一套以圓為單位的銀幣，這兩套銀幣的幣面除更換了中英文的紀(jì)年并在背面英文上加了“大清”外，其它的幣面設(shè)計(jì)接近于光緒二十二年的銀幣，其中光緒二十三年北洋機(jī)器局壹圓銀幣為背面英文錯(cuò)版(英文的二十三年被錯(cuò)鑄成二十四年)。光緒二十五年(1899年)四月，清廷下令除保留廣東、湖北兩地造幣廠外，其余造幣廠全部裁撤，力圖將鑄幣權(quán)收歸中央，同年6月清政府在北京籌辦“京局”(即中央造幣廠)。經(jīng)榮祿極力保留，清廷準(zhǔn)許北洋機(jī)器局繼續(xù)鑄造銀幣。
