五路財神共有兩種說法，其一是指的趙公明及其手下的四位部將。東路財神除了中路為武財神趙公明外，其余四路為東路財神招寶天尊蕭升、西路財神納珍天尊曹寶、南路財神招財使者陳九公、北路財神利市仙官姚少司 。這五路財神的故事可從一部中國的古典名著《封神演繹》中探得其來歷：趙公明是在開天辟地時修成大道，法力通玄，本來在三山五岳任其逍遙，奈何烽煙四起，神仙也不能置之度外 。在商朝太師聞仲的邀請下，趙公明伙同其他幾個截教的神仙蕭升、曹寶、陳九公、姚少司等與西岐軍隊大戰并屢敗對方，一時聲威大振，奈何截教違反天規，最終被輔佐西岐的正道闡教神仙所殺，魂歸封神榜 。待戰爭結束后，姜子牙封神時，感其忠勇，趙公明被封為金龍如意正乙龍虎玄壇真君之神，率領四部正神招寶天尊蕭升、納珍天尊曹寶、招財使者陳九公、利市仙官姚少司，主迎祥納福，管天下財運，故俗稱財神 。
