四川省于光緒二十九年（1903）六月在省城（成都）機(jī)器局附設(shè)成都銀元局內(nèi)開鑄銅元。次年，又興建銅幣廠，專鑄銅元。四川省鑄造的銅元，按幣面上緣所鑄的紀(jì)地文字，可分“四川官局造”和“四川省造”兩大體系。四川當(dāng)三十銅元屬于后者。

四川當(dāng)三十銅元，是未被獲準(zhǔn)發(fā)行的試鑄幣。未被獲準(zhǔn)鑄發(fā)的原因，很可能是由于當(dāng)三十的幣值不符合戶部關(guān)于銅元鑄造的規(guī)定。中國(guó)的銅元，在初創(chuàng)階段，各省是各自為政的，成色、圖案參差繁雜，幣制十分紊亂。清政府曾不斷對(duì)幣制進(jìn)行整頓，力圖劃一。雖然收效不大，但還是顯現(xiàn)了漸趨統(tǒng)一的趨勢(shì)。四川當(dāng)三十銅元鑄于光緒三十年間，已處于“光緒元寶”銅元的后期階段。根據(jù)戶部的要求，當(dāng)時(shí)各省鑄造銅元，須援引廣東成法，成色、圖案及面值以廣東省銅元為標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。廣東省銅元的幣值分別為二十文、十文、五文三等。顯然，四川當(dāng)三十銅元的鑄造是不符合這一標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的。此外，在清代的銅元鑄造中，面值當(dāng)三十者，唯有四川一家。看來(lái)，在銅元面值問(wèn)題上，其它省份的造幣廠都是循規(guī)蹈矩的。

In addition, in the copper coin casting in Qing Dynasty, the face value was 30, and only one in Sichuan. It seems that the mints in other provinces follow the rules when it comes to the face value of copper coins.
