水沖石以產(chǎn)于湘西吉首市仙鎮(zhèn)營(yíng)北二、三里的水沖灣而得名。用它制成的硯臺(tái)稱(chēng)“水沖石硯”或“水沖硯”。據(jù)清光緒年間編修的《乾州廳志》卷十三“物產(chǎn)”記載，水沖石硯“色淡青，堅(jiān)嫩發(fā)墨，質(zhì)微黃，而花紋間有山水草木之狀。
