光緒元寶出生于十九世紀(jì)末期風(fēng)雨飄搖的清朝光緒年間，清末銅價(jià)劇漲，民間毀錢為銅，以獲數(shù)倍之利，市面出現(xiàn)錢荒。廣東因停鑄制錢，市面制錢日乏，小額流通十分不便。為救錢荒，同時(shí)受香港銅元及外幣影響，光緒26年6月，兩廣總督德壽與前總督李鴻章奏準(zhǔn)廣東率先進(jìn)行仿香港銅仙鑄造機(jī)制銅元。

廣東省始造后，各省紛紛仿效，共有十九個(gè)省局購(gòu)制國(guó)外機(jī)械鑄造銅元。滿漢文化與中西文化的融合在小小一枚錢幣上，真實(shí)的反應(yīng)了光緒年間鮮明的文化特色。“戶部光緒元寶”,正面中央為“光緒元寶”及滿文“寶廣”，外環(huán)珠圈，上緣紀(jì)地文字為“戶部”。下緣紀(jì)值文字為“當(dāng)制錢二十文”；背面中央鑄“飛龍”圖及珠圈，上緣英文紀(jì)地“HUPOO”，下緣英文紀(jì)值“20CASH”。錢幣為戶部生產(chǎn)，當(dāng)時(shí)的戶部相當(dāng)于此時(shí)的中央央行，是清政府最高鑄錢機(jī)構(gòu)，這枚銅幣是清朝首次引進(jìn)外國(guó)技術(shù)以后，戶部發(fā)行的，級(jí)別比較高，也更為正統(tǒng)并且更具權(quán)威，該錢幣表面的包漿自然、歷史留下的痕跡清晰可見，，藏品在柔和的光線下散發(fā)出一種淡淡的靈氣，極具收藏價(jià)值。
