第三套人民幣先后共發(fā)行7種面額、8種原版、9種票券。如果按冠號、印制工藝和鈔紙的不同，至少可細(xì)分為24種。

第三套人民幣從1955年就開始組織調(diào)查，制定方案。1959年1月23日，中國人民銀行總行第一次向國務(wù)院上報(bào)關(guān)于更換新版人民幣的請示，2月14日，又將新版人民幣設(shè)計(jì)畫稿的主題思想上報(bào)中央政治局各位領(lǐng)導(dǎo)審閱，周總理作了十分詳細(xì)認(rèn)真的批示，提出了很多意見。在中央美術(shù)學(xué)院和中央工藝美術(shù)學(xué)院專家羅工柳、王式廓、周令釗、侯一民、陳若菊、鄧澎等主持下，組成由印制系統(tǒng)專業(yè)技術(shù)人員張作棟、石大振、賈鴻勛、劉延年、沈乃镕等參加的設(shè)計(jì)繪制小組。經(jīng)過美術(shù)專家和印制專業(yè)技術(shù)人員的密切合作，反復(fù)修改，設(shè)計(jì)出了新方案。1959年6月6日，中國人民銀行總行再次上報(bào)設(shè)計(jì)修改稿。這期間，除10元券和5角券外，其他面額的票券設(shè)計(jì)方案均被批準(zhǔn)并已陸續(xù)投入生產(chǎn)。10元券因正背面圖案及水印內(nèi)容沒有確定，其方案經(jīng)反復(fù)修改，直至1965年6月18日才被中央批準(zhǔn)，故年號也改成了“1965”年；5角券因1959年周總理審批設(shè)計(jì)稿時(shí)提出“角券中是否用一個(gè)輕工業(yè)”的意見，也一直沒有定稿，至1972年7月24日才上報(bào)設(shè)計(jì)稿樣，7月26日國務(wù)院批準(zhǔn)。因此票面年份也改成了“1972年”。第三套人民幣上的漢字行名仍沿用馬文蔚的書體，但漢字面值改成了印刷宋體字。

During this period, except for 10 yuan coupons and 50 cents coupons, the design schemes of coupons of other denominations were approved and put into production one after another. Because the design and watermark content of the front and back of the 10 yuan coupon were not determined, the scheme was repeatedly revised until June 18, 1965, and the year number was changed to "1965"; In 1959, when Premier Zhou examined and approved the design draft, he put forward the opinion of "whether a light industry should be used in the design draft", and the design draft was not submitted until July 24, 1972, and was approved by the State Council on July 26. Therefore, the face date was changed to "1972". The line names of Chinese characters in the third set of RMB still follow the book style of Ma Wenwei, but the face value of Chinese characters is changed to printed Song Style.
