雞血石是辰砂條帶的地開石，其顏色比朱砂還鮮紅。因為它的顏色像雞血一樣鮮紅，所以人們俗稱雞血石。我國最早發(fā)現(xiàn)的雞血石是浙江昌化玉巖山雞血石。后來又發(fā)現(xiàn)了內(nèi)蒙古赤峰市巴林右旗的巴林雞血石。20世紀(jì)90年代又在陜西、甘肅、四川、湖南、云南等地發(fā)現(xiàn)了雞血石。由于現(xiàn)在的昌化朱砂（汞礦）已近尾聲，所以出產(chǎn)的雞血石產(chǎn)量相當(dāng)有限，市場價格日增不減。

昌化雞血石的天生麗質(zhì)源于它是辰砂與高嶺石，地開石，葉臘石等多礦物共生的集合體。辰砂是“血”的主要成分，有鮮紅，大紅，紫紅，淡紅，團快狀，條帶狀，星點狀等高嶺石，地開石是質(zhì)地的主要成分，有白、黃、紅、青、褐等色和半透明、微透明、不透明等狀態(tài)。
