清咸豐年間(1851-1861年)，太平天國農(nóng)民起義開展迅猛，并在江蘇南京建都，此刻清政府賴以鑄錢之用的滇銅，因路途阻斷而無法運(yùn)進(jìn)北京。一方面是打壓起義急需許多的軍餉開支，一方面是鑄錢的原材料告缺，給清政府造成了嚴(yán)峻的財(cái)務(wù)困難，最終迫使清政府自咸豐三年開端發(fā)行紙幣和改鑄大錢來補(bǔ)償財(cái)務(wù)虧空。咸豐朝寶泉局所鑄錢有“當(dāng)百”、“當(dāng)二百”、“當(dāng)三百”、“當(dāng)五百”、“當(dāng)千”等五種面值。

咸豐大錢就是在這樣的大背景下產(chǎn)生的。咸豐元寶當(dāng)千錢幣是這些重鑄的大錢里面面值最高的品種，但是如今的存世的量十分稀少。該枚咸豐元寶當(dāng)千，直徑：直徑58.2㎜，方孔直徑8.8㎜，厚度4㎜。銘文字體雕刻得精致而又清晰，錢幣表面則清秀俊朗，刻著“咸豐元寶”四個(gè)字，背穿上下“當(dāng)千”，左右滿文雕刻寶局名，“寶源”兩字橫排。再讀錢文，可見無論面文還是背文，其楷書書意皆為端莊正點(diǎn)，筆劃有力，筆鋒鮮明，布局協(xié)調(diào)規(guī)范，寶源局鑄品之書意神韻昭然，歷史過渡性自然，為錢幣珍品。形制規(guī)整，大小合適，包漿老道，銹色自然，歲月流痕鮮明，流通使用痕跡明顯，銅質(zhì)精巧。其傳世品質(zhì)色品貌一目了然矣。由于咸豐元寶當(dāng)前錢幣流傳下來的不多，存世的十分稀少，所以該錢幣是十分珍貴的，很值得收藏。
