據(jù)美國錢幣專家史博祿的研究，這種帶有凹槽邊的民國二十五年船洋，是上海造幣廠用英國提供的坯餅制作的。英國政府早在白銀危機后的1935年9月即派遣首席經(jīng)濟顧問李滋羅斯（Frederick Leith-Ross）赴華協(xié)助幣制改革事宜，提出建議之一就是仿效英鎊在1920年將銀幣成色由92.5%減至50%時所用的辦法，新發(fā)行的低色銀幣采用不同的邊道以資區(qū)別。同時還送交坯餅供國內(nèi)試制，此即這種有凹槽邊銀圓的由來。由于當時美英在爭奪國際金融的主導(dǎo)地位，都希望其本國貨幣成為中國外匯儲備的結(jié)算貨幣，因此，當美方知道后即極力反對，故使得這一計劃沒有繼續(xù)進行，僅制作了極少量的樣幣。
