民國三年(即1914年)國民政府為了統(tǒng)一幣制，解決軍費(fèi)開支，也為了提高袁世凱的個(gè)人政治地位而發(fā)布了《國幣條例》，規(guī)定了民國三年袁大頭一元銀幣為本位幣，其標(biāo)準(zhǔn)重量為七錢二分，成色銀九銅一，統(tǒng)一由天津造幣廠鑄造(后在南京、廣東、誤差、甘肅造幣廠陸續(xù)鑄造)，并統(tǒng)一流通，因這些銀幣皆鑄有袁世凱的側(cè)身圖像而得名。錢幣雖小，卻是一個(gè)時(shí)代社會經(jīng)濟(jì)、政治、文化演變的重要見證，具有極高的文物價(jià)值和歷史紀(jì)念意義。并且，袁世凱統(tǒng)治時(shí)期很短，袁大頭雖發(fā)行量較大，卻也因?yàn)闀r(shí)間和地域限制無法大面積流通，后由相關(guān)部門收回重鑄，以及歲月的演進(jìn)等因素，導(dǎo)致珍品袁大頭的數(shù)量大大減少。

正面為袁世凱側(cè)面像，上緣書“中華民國三年”，“民”字中有一“點(diǎn)”，意"民主、共和、憲政及君主立憲"之思想希冀；錢背中央漢字“壹圓”字樣，周圍環(huán)兩條嘉禾紋飾，左右交互，下系結(jié)帶。民國三年袁大頭銀元的版別就和其他年份都不一樣，民國三年袁大頭銀元的正面圖案是袁世凱的側(cè)面頭像，上面的文字是：中華民國三年，在‘年’字的后面沒有‘造’，其他年份的袁大頭銀元的‘年’字后面都加上了一個(gè)字“造”。該幣雖已有“百年高齡”，但品相甚佳，錢幣自然包漿，邊緣線條粗細(xì)均勻，間距也疏密一致，人物、字跡等清晰有度，生動自然，十分精美，有很高的藝術(shù)觀賞價(jià)值和收藏投資價(jià)值。
