三葉蟲是距今5.6億年前的寒武紀就出現的最有代表性的遠古動物，是節肢動物的一種，全身明顯分為頭、胸、尾三部分，背甲堅硬，背甲為兩條背溝縱向分為大致相等的三片——一個軸葉和兩個肋葉，因此名為三葉蟲。
