公元990年，宋太宗趙光義改太平興國年號為淳化，意思是純正平和，大概還是糾結于得位問題吧，強調他來位的正確性。今陜西省咸陽市下轄淳化縣，便是當時的淳化四年，云陽縣以天子年號改名的。淳化年號一共用了五年，即從公元990年到994年，這時候發行的銅錢就是淳化元寶。
淳化元寶發行的時候，正值北宋逐步穩定，國力走強之時，淳化元寶因此發行不算少，但由于年號時間使用不長，數量也不算最多，排不進北宋銅錢各品種中的前八名。但是版本并不少，而且還有大名譽品和國寶級的品種。另外淳化元寶有一種國寶級錢幣，那就是淳化元寶供養版。宋太宗淳化初年，太宗深感江山不穩，尤其當時宋與遼金沙灘大敗。他親自督工鑄造該錢幣并送至五臺山窖藏，希望保佑大宋國泰民安，帝業萬代不斷。正面淳化元寶雋永灑脫，清麗不凡，為宋太宗御書，背面為“童子拜觀音”像，栩栩如生，該錢為銅質，華光普定為一級品。
