“元寶”這種形狀在明以前是沒(méi)有的。先秦有馬蹄形金錠，西漢時(shí)有麟趾金，均與元寶差別很大；唐代銀錠多為長(zhǎng)立方體，宋代則為束腰板形。
唐宋銀錠造型簡(jiǎn)單，堆放時(shí)能充分占用空間。而明清元寶那種馬蹄不像馬蹄、船只不像船只的怪狀幾乎無(wú)法予以合理的解釋。現(xiàn)在人們的比較牽強(qiáng)的說(shuō)法是：古人習(xí)慣將錢系于腰間，將元寶豎起來(lái)用布條系于腰上便于攜帶。
在中國(guó)貨幣史上，正式把金銀稱作“元寶”，始于元代。不過(guò)，早在唐初開(kāi)元通寶行世時(shí)，民間就有取其碩大、貴重之意，旋讀為“開(kāi)通元寶”的。而元代呼金銀錢為“元寶”，則是元朝之寶的意思，黃金叫作：金元寶，銀錠叫作銀元寶，既有政治含義，也是對(duì)金銀貨幣約定俗成的通稱。
