淳化元寶一般有銅錢鐵錢六式，是當時宋朝全國通用流通的貨幣，錢幣正面刻有行書：“淳化元寶”四字，字體為北宋太宗的親筆，從書法上可以看出宋太宗筆法流連、十分灑脫，可見宋太宗的筆法功底和對書法的癡迷，錢幣的背面是兩尊佛像，佛像的神態非常逼真，栩栩如生，右邊是觀音菩薩，觀音菩薩手持蓮花，端祥的坐在八葉蓮花寶座之上，蓮花寶座之下祥云纏繞，給人慈善、安詳的感覺，左邊是善財童子，善財童子頭發挽起，雙手合十，栩栩如生，童顏活潑俏皮，身體微微的靠向觀音菩薩的蓮花寶座，背面圖儼然是一副“善財童子拜觀音”圖,充分的突顯出了宋朝對佛教的重視，對佛教的信奉自古至今都存在，現在許多的人依然信奉佛教，敬仰佛祖，教人慈愛善良，這是值得收藏的原因之一，另外，銅錢上的圖案，不僅是“淳化元寶”四個字，更是錢幣背面的佛像都雕刻的神態自如、線條流暢自然、清晰莊嚴，栩栩如生，可以看出當時年代的金屬雕刻工藝水平，其中的悠久歷史文化也是淳化元寶值得收藏的另外一個重要原因，根據上面我們所講的這些文化，都是淳化元寶值得收藏的原因。

公元990年，宋太宗趙光義改太平興國年號為淳化，意思是純正平和，大概還是糾結于得位問題吧，強調他來位的正確性。今陜西省咸陽市下轄淳化縣，便是當時的淳化四年，云陽縣以天子年號改名的。淳化年號一共用了五年，即從公元990年到994年，這時候發行的銅錢就是淳化元寶。淳化元寶發行的時候，正值北宋逐步穩定，國力走強之時，淳化元寶因此發行不算少，但由于年號時間使用不長，數量也不算最多，排不進北宋銅錢各品種中的前八名。淳化元寶僅見小平錢，錢文相傳為宋太宗親手所寫，為皇帝御書，有真書、行書、草書和隸書四種。但是版本并不少，而且還有大名譽品和國寶級的品種。
