河南銅元始鑄于光緒三十年。是年，河南巡撫陳夔龍奏準(zhǔn)在開封設(shè)銅元局。光緒三十二年，開封銅元局改名為度支部造幣汴廠，至光緒三十三年，月造額達(dá)48萬(wàn)枚。后清政府限制鑄額，規(guī)定河南月造銅元30萬(wàn)枚。至光緒三十四年二月，河南造幣廠共造十文銅元2.3億枚。民國(guó)初年，控制河南的軍閥督撫為支付巨額的軍政開支，銅元鑄造數(shù)額驟增。民國(guó)二十年(1931年)，河南銅元局改名機(jī)器制造局，至民國(guó)二十二年秋，因銅源斷絕，造幣機(jī)構(gòu)被撤銷。

In the twentieth year of the Republic of China (1931), Henan Tongyuan Bureau was renamed Machinery Manufacturing Bureau. By the autumn of the twenty-second year of the Republic of China, the coinage institution was abolished due to the disconnection of copper sources.

藏品正面圈內(nèi)鑄有銘文“光緒元寶”，珠圈外上環(huán)鑄楷體“河南省造”四字，底部鑄貨幣價(jià)值：“當(dāng)制錢十文”，中心為太極圖。元寶背面內(nèi)圈鑄有神龍騰飛圖騰，外圈鑄有英文，品相精致，其審美風(fēng)格獨(dú)特。其中，有太極圖案的銅元“光緒元寶”鑄于光緒三十年至宣統(tǒng)元年(1904～1909年)。這種銅元正面有“河南省造”、“光緒元寶”、“當(dāng)制錢十文”等銘文，中有太極圖。背有”HO-NAN(河南)、“TEN CASH”(十文)等文，中有龍圖。龍圖分水龍、旱龍、八星水龍、大清龍等。清代，以龍圖為銅元的主要圖案的情形十分普遍，但以太極圖為銅元的圖案，則顯得少見而具有鮮明的地方特色。
