早在明朝中期，西班牙就已在墨西哥制造“本洋”銀幣(俗稱“雙柱”)，至清代乾隆、嘉慶年間，中國(guó)對(duì)外貿(mào)易日趨繁榮，從外國(guó)流入中國(guó)的銀幣種類也日漸增多。至清朝末年，帝國(guó)主義列強(qiáng)掀起了瓜分中國(guó)的狂潮。清政府腐敗無(wú)能，無(wú)法抵御外敵侵略，先后與外國(guó)列強(qiáng)簽訂了一系列不平等條約，使中國(guó)淪為半封建半殖民地社會(huì)。外國(guó)列強(qiáng)為了在華爭(zhēng)奪利益，幾十個(gè)國(guó)家的銀元先后涌入中國(guó)，通過(guò)不公平貿(mào)易，換取我國(guó)大量白銀。除“雙柱”外，還有墨西哥“鷹洋”、英國(guó)“站洋”、印度支那“坐洋”、日本“龍洋”和德國(guó)威廉一世紀(jì)念銀幣等品種，其中英國(guó)“站洋”以制作精良、圖案美觀而著稱于世。
