奉天省造幣廠是目前我國歷史最悠久的造幣廠，主要生產流通銀幣、金銀紀念幣等。1896年(光緒二十二年)，請政府根據盛京將軍依克唐阿的奏請，批準設立并籌建奉天機器局以鑄造機制銀幣，同年依克唐阿在今沈陽東關外、大東邊門內，開工興建了“奉天機器局”，于次年建成。創建之初，從天津的德國禮和洋行購進德國、美國制造的機器、鍋爐，以蒸汽機為動力，亦有部分手工操作。1898年(光緒二十四年)，奉天機器局開始制作一元、五角、二角、一角及半角的銀幣，同時在城鄉市面上流通。該幣以其生產工藝先進、成色固定、形制統一、重量一致、便于攜帶和計算簡便等優點，一經問世，深受社會歡迎。

In 1898 (the 24th year of Guangxu's reign), the Mukden Bureau of Machinery began to make silver coins of one dollar, five cents, two cents, one and a half cents, which were also in circulation in urban and rural markets. 1900年(光緒二十六年)，奉天機器局擴建略具規模，機鑄當十帶孔的銅元。5月，義和團興起，時事不穩。10月，沙俄軍攻陷省城奉天，奉天機器局被俄軍強占、破壞。1902年3月(光緒二十八年)，經盛京將軍增祺向俄方交涉，方將機器局交還奉天當局，奉天機器局的造幣廠從機器局分離并更名為奉天銀元局。對殘損機器重新修復，于1903年7月恢復生產，鑄造了以“兩”為單位的“奉天省癸卯光緒元寶庫平銀一兩”和“奉天省造癸卯光緒元寶庫平七錢二分”兩種銀幣。

這枚銀幣便系光緒二十九年(1903年)奉天銀元局鑄造的“奉天省造光緒元寶庫平銀一兩銀幣。該幣正面上鐫“奉天省造”四字，中間鐫“光緒元寶”四字，左右鐫“癸卯”二字，下面鐫“庫平銀一兩”五字，正中為滿文“光緒元寶”字樣。該幣背面內圈鐫龍圖，外圈鐫英文，兩旁鐫小花飾。此幣字體俊秀、深淺適度。蟠龍圖案威武大氣，刻畫精美，因時代久遠，留下了自然的包漿痕跡，但并不影響清晰地辨認出其文字、紋飾等，不失為銀幣中的收藏佳選。
