五子登科本為中國民間諺語，最初來源于民間故事，話說五代后周時期，燕山府有個叫竇禹鈞的人，他的五個兒子都品學(xué)兼優(yōu)，先后登科及第，故稱“五子登科”。竇禹鈞本人也享受八十二歲高壽，無疾而終。當(dāng)朝太師馮道為他賦詩云：“燕山竇十郎，教子有義方。靈椿一株老，丹桂五枝芳。”《三字經(jīng)》有：“竇燕山，有義方，教五子，名俱揚”的句子來歌頌他，教導(dǎo)兒童要好好念書，父親也要教子有方。五子登科后來成為中國傳統(tǒng)吉祥圖案，寄托了一般人家期望子弟都能像竇禹鈞五子一樣獲得科考成功。
