玻璃隕石為半透明的玻璃質體，有微弱磁性，顏色為墨綠色、綠色，淡綠色，棕色，褐色，深褐色等，還有少見的朱砂色。玻璃隕石是在高空、高溫、高壓和高速下形成的，通體布滿致密的小氣泡，外部有融殼，融殼上有流紋，外部和融殼下有時會產生大的氣印。玻璃隕石是一種天然玻璃物質。由于外觀似黑曜巖，故又稱似黑曜巖。
