清朝初年設置江南省。它的轄地范圍為現今的、安徽、浙江、福建、江西、湖南等地。以后，江南省轄地縮小到江蘇、安徽兩省，至1723年(元年)江南省被撤銷，轄地復歸江蘇、安徽兩省。江南省鑄造銅幣歷史不長，待江南省所鑄的銅幣在市面上流通之時，江南省早已不復存在了。故它是我國貨幣史上惟一有省之名份而無實際省份的一種銅幣。
