此件唐代貞觀金碗，應(yīng)該說是“唐鴛鴦蓮瓣紋金碗”。金碗猶如盛開的花朵，大體取自蓮花的造型，碗壁通體錘揲為蓮瓣，然后用鏨刻的手法在最顯眼的每個蓮瓣內(nèi)都以一種動物作主題紋飾，有狐、兔、獐、鹿、鸚鵡、鴛鴦等，其周同則填以形態(tài)各異的花草。走獸或抬腿狂奔，或回頭相顧；禽鳥或展翅飛翔，或站立棲息，不管是靜態(tài)的還是動態(tài)的，個個栩栩如生，呼之欲出，富有強(qiáng)烈的韻律感，讓人能感受到生命躍動的激情。下層蓮瓣內(nèi)則一律為相同的忍冬草，以相對的穩(wěn)定，營造出平和、恬靜的氣氛，烘托上層動物的生機(jī)勃勃。所選擇的動物題材，或者是人們打獵中常見的，或者是具有和諧美滿、多子多福等吉祥寓意的。

金碗的圈足一周有一圈非常細(xì)密的小金珠排列在一起，這是當(dāng)時唐代的工匠采用了一種叫做炸珠的工藝制作而成的。所謂炸珠，通俗的說就是金液和水之間存在一定的溫度差，二者相遇時會發(fā)生迸濺，當(dāng)時的工匠們將黃金溶液滴入溫水中，炸出細(xì)小的金珠，然后從中選擇質(zhì)地比較均勻的焊接在器物表面。這一古老的技法，看似簡單，其實涵蓋了物理變化、化學(xué)變化、電鍍工藝、拋光工藝等一些列復(fù)雜工藝。在唐代，沒有任何機(jī)械儀器的條件下，這樣的技術(shù)非常機(jī)智。
