光緒年間，1875年－1908年，由兩廣總督張之洞率先引進英國鑄幣機器鑄造銀元和銅元。之后各省紛紛仿效。 一共有十九個省局鑄造，除中央戶部，地方省所鑄銅元，皆在其正面上緣鐫寫省名，背文為滿文記局名，也有星月紋。江南省就是十九個省局的其中一個，滿清入關后，于清順治二年（1645年）沿明制設江南承宣布政使司，即廢除南京為國都的地位，巡撫 衙門設于江寧府（今南京）。清代的江南省前身是明朝的南直隸江南省，范圍大致相當于今天的江蘇省、上海市和安徽省。
