《大明盛世》畫的主要內(nèi)容是：公元1433年，以南京夫子廟為中心的明朝秦淮風(fēng)光。明宣宗宣德八年春，南京久旱。七歲的皇太子朱祁鎮(zhèn)，即后來(lái)的明英宗，隨父皇明太孫宣宗朱瞻基、生母孫皇后，其弟朱祁鈺即后來(lái)的代宗，御使振恤，巡游南京夫子廟。明朝四世三位皇帝（朱祁鎮(zhèn)兩次出任皇帝），英宗的母親孫皇后皇太后，同時(shí)出現(xiàn)在一幅畫中。畫中還有其他未考的皇親國(guó)戚。成畫的時(shí)間是公元1442年、明英宗正統(tǒng)七年壬戌。其時(shí)英宗朱祁鎮(zhèn)已十六歲，親政的年齡。

《大明盛世圖》書畫卷共有五部分組成：
一、畫題篆書大字，大明盛世，壬戌袁江。作品完成于明英宗正統(tǒng)七年，公元1442年。其時(shí)，戴進(jìn)五十四歲。明宣宗一家人，御使南京秦淮河九年以后，太子朱祁鎮(zhèn)已經(jīng)登基明英宗皇帝七年。
二、主畫面手卷，絹本，墨筆，鐵線描和暈葉描。描繪南京通濟(jì)門，直到聚寶門即今天的中華門，十里秦淮河明代民情風(fēng)物，十處景觀。夫子廟大成殿、天下文樞、文德橋、貢院等，564年前景觀歷歷在目。畫面上五百二十多位明代人物，皇帝皇后太子皇子等、明朝其他皇族，社會(huì)各界軍民百姓，栩栩如生，秦淮河畔熙熙攘攘熱熱鬧鬧，好一幅明朝太平盛世圖。
三、江蘇撫臺(tái)柳宏識(shí)行書，介紹作者戴進(jìn)、畫境。行書位于畫上方留白處，與畫卷同始終。
四、清朝翁同龢光緒九年行書評(píng)。翁當(dāng)時(shí)任工部尚書充軍機(jī)大臣。行書評(píng)價(jià)如下：余閱此圖實(shí)為少見之珍品明代戴進(jìn)之筆師出馬遠(yuǎn)其筆法精細(xì)決非一般畫工所比喻宜以選入神品。
五、收藏印。萬(wàn)歷 鑒藏寳 朱印，位于題跋。
