吳二年（1368）正月，朱元璋稱帝，建立明朝，改元洪武。同年三月，明太祖朱元璋于命京城（南京）工部寶源局及各省寶泉局鑄行“洪武通寶”，由工部主管鑄錢，下設寶源局。朱元璋為避諱元朝的元字，把所鑄之錢錢文一律叫通寶而不叫元寶，而不只是為避諱他自己的名字，以后所鑄之錢也都沒有元寶錢文。
In the first month of the second year of Wu Dynasty (1368), Zhu Yuanzhang was called emperor. He established the Ming Dynasty and changed it to Hongwu.
