在古代，璧是一種重要玉器，使用年代之長、品種之多是其他玉器不能相比的。璧有以下幾種用途:一為禮器，二為佩玉，三為禮儀饋贈品，四為葬玉。玉璧的紋飾隨著時代不同而有變化。商代璧多飾弦紋。春秋戰國至漢代，玉璧為云紋、谷紋、蒲紋，間或有螭紋。唐、宋、元以后出現了凹雕螭紋、乳丁紋、獸面紋、花鳥紋裝飾的玉璧。玉璧的這些用途在春秋戰國時代幾乎都存在，都可以從古文獻及現代考古發掘實物中找到證據。
